Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network in the world by size.

The first passenger train in India was between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane in April 1853 during Governor General Lord Dalhousie.

Lord Dalhousie is known as Father of Indian Railways.

The first passenger railway train in eastern India ran from Howrah, near Calcutta to Hoogly, for distance of 24 miles, on 15 August 1854.

The first passenger train in South India ran from Royapuram / Veyasarapady (Madras) to Wallajah Road (Arcot) on 1st July 1856.

The first railway bridge in India was built over "Dapoorie viaduct" over Ulhas river when Bombay-Thane line was extended to Kalyan in May 1854.

The first railway line in Kerala was commissioned on 12 March 1861 from Beypore to Tirur. 

Indian Railways are the largest employer among public sector undertakings in the country.

Parsik Tunnel is the first railway tunnel that was built in India (1865).

Longest Tunnel: The country’s longest tunnel is Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel 11.215 km that was completed in December 2012 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Longest Platform: Indian Railways owns the longest railway platform in the world at Kharagpur (West Bengal) with a length of 2,733 ft (1072.5 m) in length.

 Longest run by a train: Vivek Express from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari travels a distance of 4273 km, making it the longest run in terms of total time and distance in Indian Railways.

 The first metro service in India was inaugurated in Kolkata in 1984 by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Konkan Railway was opened on 26 January 1998. It is operated by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, headquartered at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The National Rail Museum is a museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi was opened in 1977.
